PROFILE

On Wednesday morning February 27, 2008 world renowned car customizer and t.v. personality Boyd Coddington passed away. Our heartfelt condolences to his friends, family and fans. Boyd will be greatly missed.

You don’t have to be a hot rodder to know Boyd Coddington’s work. From Hot Wheels and Franklin Mint cars to celebrity rides - - he crafted “CadZZilla” for ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons and a 1934 Ford coupe for Van Halen’s Michael Anthony. Boyd’s legendary designs are as mainstream as they are creative. It all started on a small farm outside of Rupert, Idaho, where Boyd grew up in the ‘40s and ‘50s and it started early. Boyd was just 13 when he traded a shotgun for his first truck a 1931 Chevrolet pickup … which his enraged father subsequently made him return. Undeterred, Boyd began designing, building, chopping and welding parts from one car to another, as well as frenching and fabricating car parts and panels. Boyd attended machinist trade school at Idaho State University and completed a three year apprenticeship in machining. In 1966, he moved to the hotbed of hot rods, California. There he began building hot rods by day and working as a machinist for Western Gear by night. He soon became renowned for crafting the most celebrated rods in the world. In 1977 he opened his own shop, Hot Rods by Boyd, behind his Cypress, California home. His first customer was Vern Luce whose car (a '33 coupe) won the Al Slonaker Award at the 1981 Oakland Roadshow. In 1988, Coddington founded Boyds Wheels Inc to manufacture and market custom automobile alloy wheels made from billet aluminum. In 1997, Coddington (along with his then chief designer Chip Foose) was inducted into the Hot Rod Hall of Fame. As of 2006, Coddington has a 50,000 square feet garage located in La Habra, California and has 70 employees. They build hot rods, wheels, component products and consignment cars.
